Roof Ventilation for Ontario Homes

Why attic ventilation affects roof lifespan, energy costs, and ice dams — and what a properly vented Ontario roof system looks like.

Why ventilation extends roof life

Trapped heat and moisture in an unvented attic bakes shingles from below and promotes mold on the deck. Proper airflow keeps the roof system dry and cool year-round.

The 1:300 rule

Ontario code generally requires 1 sq ft of net free vent area per 300 sq ft of attic floor, split between intake (soffit) and exhaust (ridge or roof vents). Many older homes are severely under-vented.

Intake and exhaust must balance

Ridge vents without open soffit intake are ineffective — they can actually pull conditioned air from your living space. Trident assesses the full airflow path, not just exhaust caps.

Ventilation during replacement

A roof replacement is the best time to correct ventilation. Trident integrates ridge vents, baffles, and soffit checks into every full tear-off project.
